The Luxury Shoe Guide
Fit, lasts, soles and construction for dress shoes, sneakers and everything between.
Shoes are the luxury category where fit is non-negotiable. A refined last or premium leather cannot compensate for pressure points, poor support or a sole unsuited to your daily routes. Try both shoes, walk on a firm surface and allow for how feet change through the day.
Read the buying guides ↗Check length, width, instep, heel hold and toe-room while standing and walking. Sizing varies by last and country, so use measurements as a starting point. Ask whether the sole can be replaced, whether the shoe is leather-lined, and how the upper responds to rain. For sneakers, inspect stitching, bonding, insole and the exact release/version rather than relying on box labels.
Look at symmetry, clean stitching, even sole attachment, smooth lining, stable heel blocks and consistent finishing. On used shoes, inspect heel wear, outsole thickness, insole impressions, creasing and odour. A resoled shoe can be an excellent purchase if the work is disclosed and competent; original packaging is not a condition grade.
Wet pavements, heat and long walks between transit and appointments are common realities. Consider grip, sole thickness, breathable lining and whether a local cobbler can service the construction. Leather soles need particular caution in rain; protect new shoes before the first downpour and let damp pairs dry slowly with shoe trees.
Rotate pairs, brush off grit, use cedar shoe trees for structured leather shoes, and let footwear rest between wears. Use products suited to the leather or textile. Do not put wet shoes beside a heater; direct heat can shrink leather and weaken adhesives.

The short answers
Frequently asked questions
Should luxury shoes be bought in my usual size?
Not automatically. Last shape, width and construction change fit. Try the exact model or use the maker's model-specific fit guidance, especially when buying cross-border.
Are luxury sneakers repairable?
Some are, some rely on bonded assemblies that are difficult to rebuild. Ask the brand or a specialist about sole replacement and parts before treating repairability as a selling point.
